Michigan appears to have two traditional nicknames, although it seems that neither of them is strictly official: 'Great Lakes State' and 'Wolverine State'.
Michigan touches four of the five Great Lakes; no other state does this. According to the Reader's Digest, its people were dubbed 'wolverines' by Ohioans during the 1835 Toledo War between the two states, because they fought like that carnivorous mammal, which is known for its tenacity and stubbornness.
